James Grant, musician and singer with the band Love and Money answers Active Nation's 10 Questions
What's your current personal activity goal?
I'd like to be a bit fitter. I would really like to get out cycling more regularly.
What keeps you active in your day to day life?
Kids. I go out on the bike with my youngest, Ursula, who's 10. I also walk a lot - I hit the hills on my bike and play football once a week – which doesn't sound like much, I know...
Who/what inspires you to get active?
Worries about health and the desire not to have an enormous gut dangling over my jeans. I also like to blow away the cobwebs and think a lot of little worries can be sorted out by a good game of football or a run on the bike.
What are your favourite activities?
Playing footie and cycling. Also, I love swimming in the sea, even in Scotland.
What's your greatest active achievement?
Me and a couple of mates cycled the Camino (a pilgrimage trail in Northern Spain) a couple of years back. It was very difficult but fantastically uplifting when we finished it. I also walked the West Highland Way a couple of times with mates and loved it.
Is there any new sport or activity you'd like to try?
I'd really like to try scuba diving. I've always loved snorkelling on holiday, too. I'm off to Spain tomorrow on my hols and where I'm going they run a 2 day course, so I might give it a go.
How do you stay motivated?
It's difficult, but the fact is, I always feel better after I do exercise, even when I really, really can't be bothered.
What do you enjoy most about being active?
When you come back from whatever it is you have done you can treat yourself to feel you have license to eat like a pig! You also feel better because you've achieved something.
What's your top tip for a low cost way to keep active?
Get a bike
What advice would you give to people to help them reach their own personal activity goal?
When you do something like the Camino, or run a marathon, or climb a mountain...if you set yourself a challenge and you achieve it, it just feels really good - and you'll want to do it again and do more of it. So I would suggest setting yourself a challenge or goal, it really focuses the mind and feels amazing when you have completed it!!
