Stroll your way to fitness
One of the quickest, easiest and cheapest ways to get more active is to put your best foot forward and get walking! Easy walks to suit all ages and abilities are just outside your door. Walking is a great way to get fitter, and there are so many enjoyable routes out there to try – all for free!!
If country walks aren't your thing, though, you can still fit walking into your life. Why not leave the car at home a couple of times a week and see how easy it is to get your 30 minutes of exercise a day!
Why not check out some of the excellent walks below and set yourself a goal to go walking this month?
Health Walks
Paths For All run regular guided Health Walks all over the country every week. Led by a qualified guide, these short walks are designed to increase your heart rate and get you moving. So if you haven't done much walking for a while, why not pop along to a health walk? You'll get the chance to take in some fresh air, have a refreshing quick stroll and meet new people, too.
Family Forest Walks
Taking the kids out for a forest walk is a wonderful way to spend the day and certainly beats lying around at home playing computer games! You can organise a nature trail, explore woodland and spend some quality time as a family outdoors. The Forestry Commission manages forest and woodland all over Scotland, and you can search their website for a list of easy walks here.
Walk By The Water
Scotland's lochs, rivers and waterways are not only beautiful but provide great opportunities for memorable walks that aren't too hilly so are perfect for all the family. From easy towpath rambles along the stunning Forth and Clyde canal, to picturesque Highland lochside walks, a walk near water will lift your spirits and provide you some great views while you get out and about. Organised Walks
If there's somewhere you fancy exploring, you don't have to go it alone. Ramblers Scotland organise a wide variety of easy guided walks every week. Volunteers take groups of willing walkers for local strolls so you can get to know your area better and meet new people. To search for an organised walk near you, click here.
Heritage Routes
Did you know that despite living near to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world, half of Scots access the outdoors less than once a week? Now's the time to make a change and get out there to see what our backyard has to offer. Scottish Natural Heritage has information on hundreds of walking routes around Scotland, from your local park to ranger led walks. So let's all get out there and celebrate the great Scottish outdoors!
